Student Residence Renovation and Extension

The student dormitory is located diagonally opposite the North Cemetery in Munich’s Schwabing district. The subway station Nordfriedhof is accessible within a few minutes by foot and provides students with a direct connection to the subway station Universität. The client is the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising.

The existing building was a four-storey block that was inserted into a row, with the centrally inserted extension creating a T-shape. In addition, the existing block was extended with another storey, offering a new total area of 6,500m².

The rooms, sanitary areas and common areas are housed from the ground floor to the fourth floor. The standard floors each house 29 rooms with shared sanitary facilities and eight rooms with private sanitary facilities. In the attic, all three ends of the T-shaped body are capped by a terrace. In the renovated area of the basement there is a large auditorium. The jewel of the dormitory complex is the chapel designed in collaboration with the artist Manfred Mayerle, which was personally consecrated by Cardinal Reinhard Marx.

Mostly natural materials are used for interior design. For example, natural stone was used for the floor coverings, tile for the common areas and rubber latex for the private areas. The walls are largely made of exposed concrete and are partially plastered or clad with wooden slats in the common areas. The ceilings are also made of exposed concrete or are plastered. Carpentry installations make the bedrooms practical and easy to use. A few pastel-coloured accents complete the bright, inviting atmosphere of the dormitory.
